Georgia is not yet on the map of obvious yoga destinations, and that is precisely what gives it its appeal. Far from crowded islands and centres designed for wellness tourism, the country opens the doors to a wild Caucasus. Head to Upper Svaneti, a valley long cut off from the world where stone villages with medieval towers stand watch at the foot of glaciers. What you experience there, when to leave, and who this trip is for.
A setting that few retreats offer
Svaneti does not resemble any other yoga destination. High-altitude meadows, glacial streams, and on the horizon, peaks that exceed 5 000 metres. The hamlet of Lakhushdi, where for example Embody Your Yoga is nestled, sets the tone: a few houses, thousand-year-old Svan towers, and the silence of the mountain as the only soundtrack. Here, nature does not occupy the background, it occupies the entire space.
What does the stay look like
The rhythm is simple, the venues are small, with hosts on site. The day combines one to two yoga practices, long hikes to Ushguli (one of the highest inhabited villages in Europe), waterfalls, and high-altitude lakes. Meals are vegetarian, based on local produce, and meals are taken together. Luxury is not the promise of this mountain, authenticity is.
When to go and how to get there
Summer, from June to September, remains the only window when the passes are open and Upper Svaneti is welcoming. Out of season, access closes and most venues with it. Plan a real journey, a flight to Tbilisi or Kutaisi, then the road or an internal flight to Mestia. The time difference remains small from France (+2 to +3 hours), which saves the fatigue of long journeys. To weigh this destination against others, our guide how to choose your yoga retreat can help.
Who it is for
This journey appeals to hikers, mountain lovers, and those who are tired of conventional tourism. If you dream of real disconnection more than comfort, Svaneti will delight you. However, you need to enjoy hiking and simple, rustic conditions: it is not the best destination if you feel unsure about your first retreat. In this case, prefer a gentle format first, such as a weekend of yoga near you, before aiming for the Caucasus.
