At first glance, these are two worlds: on one side the energy of the ocean, on the other the calm of the mat. Yet, more and more venues are combining the two in the same week, and it’s not just a brochure argument. Yoga and surfing fundamentally work on the same things: breath, balance, and the ability to stay present when everything is moving. That’s why combining them does so much good.
Two practices that complement each other
Surfing is demanding for the body. Paddling requires strong shoulders and back, getting up on the board mobilises the hips and legs, and balance engages deep muscles that a sedentary life leaves dormant for the rest of the year. Yoga prepares exactly this ground: it opens the shoulders, loosens the hips, strengthens the centre of the body and teaches breathing under effort.
The opposite is also true. After a session in the waves, a few slow postures release tension and prevent stiffness that can spoil the next day. Morning on the mat, afternoon in the water: the two moments complement each other instead of competing.
The same mindset
Beyond the physical, there is a more discreet connection. On a board, it is impossible to think about your emails: you have to feel the wave, choose the moment, accept falling and starting again. It is a form of meditation in motion, where attention is entirely focused on the present.
Yoga cultivates the same thing, but in a calmer way. Learning to breathe in an uncomfortable posture is exactly what helps to remain serene when the ocean gets rough. Many practitioners say that the mat has made their surfing more poised, and that the waves have made their yoga more vibrant.
Who are these stays for
Good news: you don’t need to know how to surf to get started. Most places that combine the two welcome beginners, with equipment on site and instructors who start on the gentlest waves. Yoga, on the other hand, always adapts to each person’s level.
These retreats are particularly suitable for those who need to move to unwind. If the idea of sitting in silence for a whole week makes you a bit anxious, alternating between surfing and yoga offers a more active way to switch off, without pressure to perform.
Where to experience this combination
Yoga and surfing naturally come together where the ocean is welcoming and the climate is mild. Three destinations often feature in our selection:
- Portugal: the Atlantic coast, from Ericeira to the Algarve, features small retreat venues where you can catch a wave just minutes from your mat.
- Morocco: around Essaouira, between ocean and argan trees, in a French-speaking country and just a few hours' flight away.
- Sri Lanka: the south coast and its tropical beaches, for a trip further afield when you have time for a longer stay.
You can find all the venues that honestly combine the two on our page Yoga & surf. We only list a venue when its official source really confirms this aspect: no promise of waves where there are none.
