Portugal has established itself in just a few years as one of the flagship destinations for yoga in Europe, and it’s not just a trend. A mild climate for much of the year, long Atlantic beaches, a quiet way of life and short flights from France: everything invites you to slow down without going to the other side of the world. Before booking, getting a sense of the regions, seasons and atmosphere will help you choose the right spot.
The main regions to know
The country is not uniform, and each area has its own colour.
- The Lisbon and Ericeira region: less than an hour from the capital, Ericeira is a renowned surf reserve. Houses that combine yoga and waves are numerous, in a young and active atmosphere.
- Alentejo: just south of Lisbon, this is unspoilt rural Portugal: hills, cork oaks and quiet villages. Ideal for peace and switching off, away from the crowds.
- Algarve: in the far south, its spectacular beaches and warmer climate make it the most well-known region. The wilder west coast is home to small eco retreats, while the south is more touristy.
When to go
Portugal can be visited almost all year round, but the experience changes a lot depending on the season.
Spring, from April to June, is probably the ideal time: the days are mild, nature is green, and the places are not yet crowded. Autumn, from September to October, offers a comparable climate, with the ocean still warm from the summer heat.
In the summer, July and August, it is bright but more crowded and hotter, especially in the Algarve. Winter remains accessible, cooler and more humid, perfect for those seeking great calm and lower prices, provided you accept a few days of rain.
The atmosphere you will find there
What comes up most often in participant feedback is simplicity. Portuguese retreats rarely rely on ostentatious luxury: restored houses, eco-lodges, local cuisine, and seasonal products. Yoga is often accompanied by walking, surfing, and long periods of free time facing the ocean.
The welcome is generally warm and unpretentious, and the widely spoken English is enough to be understood everywhere. It is a reassuring destination for a first retreat outside France, exotic enough without being disorienting.
Surf and yoga, a natural duo
It is difficult to talk about Portugal without mentioning surfing. The Atlantic coast has made it one of the most popular spots in Europe, and many venues combine the two practices in the same week. If the idea of alternating between mats and waves appeals to you, we have dedicated an article to it: yoga and surfing, why this combination works so well.
