Cubjac (Dordogne) · France, Meditation & yoga · silence

In Cubjac, in Dordogne, le Moulin de Chaves is a meditation centre installed in an old mill. Founded in 2005 by Gail Aylward, Martin Aylward, and Ian Davidson, it hosts contemplative retreats rooted in the Buddhist tradition of mindfulness meditation. The choice of stay depends first on the teacher and the practice framework offered.

Who is it for?

Unless otherwise stated, silent retreats are also open to beginners. It is still possible to speak with teachers during the times provided for this purpose. Before booking, take the time to read the session instructions: silence usually also concerns reading and phone use.

Not suitable in these cases: you want to maintain an active social life or use your phone freely during a silent retreat.

The programme

The sessions are guided by Martin Aylward or guest teachers. On most retreats, about an hour a day is devoted to helping with the functioning of the venue: dishes, vegetable preparation, cleaning, or gardening. This service time, called karma yoga, is part of the practice.

Accommodation and meals

You can choose an individual or shared room, an equipped tent provided by the Moulin, or your own tent on certain retreats. The sanitary facilities vary according to the accommodation. Three meals are served each day. The cuisine is mainly plant-based; dishes containing gluten, eggs, or dairy products are indicated. Specific dietary needs are specified at registration.

On site and in the surrounding area

The grounds border the river and include bamboo groves. To come by public transport, the Périgueux train station is a point of arrival, then the journey continues to Cubjac. Buses are scarce on weekends: check the connection before buying your train ticket.
